Lighthouse Imaging Cancels Asset Purchase Agreement
January 26, 2005

January 24, 2005—Portland, Maine –Lighthouse Imaging Corporation and Viking Systems Inc. have agreed to terminate an agreement under which Lighthouse Imaging would sell its assets to Viking Systems. The companies will continue to act as independent entities and collaborate on research and development projects that bring advanced optics and imaging to surgical vision systems.

Lighthouse Imaging was founded in 1984 by Dr. Dennis Leiner, its president. The company manufactures a variety of optical products used in instruments considered standard of care in medicine today. Its endoscope measurement products are used to evaluate many of the endoscopes sold by major manufacturers in the United States, Europe, and China. Lighthouse will continue to develop and manufacture new products for its customers and will retain all of its employees.

“Both Lighthouse and Viking are well positioned to serve their markets and by continuing as independent companies, will more efficiently address the evolving needs of current and potential customers. We maintain a good relationship,” agreed Dr. Leiner and Thomas B. Marsh, President and CEO of Viking Systems. “Lighthouse will continue to pursue its expertise and passion, which is medical optics product development,” stated Dr. Leiner.

2002 MTI Development Award
June 26, 2002

May 2002 Development Award
For Immediate Release, Contact: Dr. Dennis C. Leiner

PORTLAND – The Maine Technology Institute (MTI) approved awards for six innovative research & development projects, according to Dr. Janet Yancey-Wrona, Director.

Lighthouse Imaging was one of the six companies to receive a development award, up to $155,000 (with matching funds of over $172,000) in the Precision Manufacturing Technology category for the project, EndoSpector, the endoscope analyzer. The EndoSpector is an endoscope analyzing device specifically designed for field use. Primary market for this device is hospitals and outpatient surgeries

“These Development Awards, ranging from $10,000 to $500,000 and requiring a 1:1 cash match, are to support research and development of new products or services,” Dr. Yancey-Wrona said. “At yesterday’s Board meeting, we approved six awards from three of the seven targeted technology sectors and, if fully funded, the recipients will receive over $1,548,000 in MTI funding.”

Development Awards are evaluated by outside peer experts for scientific and technical merit, and commercial feasibility. The potential for positive economic impact on Maine is then reviewed by the MTI Technology Boards. Development Award payments are contingent on successful completion of milestones, and successful commercialization will trigger repayment to MTI.

While MTI is interested in each business, Development Awards are made for specific projects. “We have to see a project budget to determine how much is needed to do each aspect of the project. In each instance, the reviewers evaluate whether the budget is reasonable for the tasks proposed,” she added.

“The Development Awards are always a very competitive process,” Dr. Yancey-Wrona said,

The MTI was created by the Maine Legislature in 1999 to encourage, promote, stimulate and support research and development activity leading to the commercialization of new products and services in the state’s technology-intensive industrial sectors.

Lighthouse Awarded MTI Seed Grant
March 26, 2002

For Immediate Release, Contact: Dr. Dennis C. Leiner March 8, 2002 Lighthouse Imaging is Awarded MTI Seed Grant

PORTLAND – Lighthouse Imaging Corporations was one of 25 Maine businesses to receive a seed grant from the Maine Technology Institute (MTI), according to Dr. Janet Yancey-Wrona, director.
“These Seed Grants, which can be up to $10,000, are for small research and development projects or for technical or business planning consulting,” Dr. Yancey-Wrona said. “We approved 25 grants out of 62 applications that were reviewed.”

It was the largest number of seed grants ever awarded in any one round, Dr. Yancey-Wrona said, and 62 represents the largest number of applications received at any one time by MTI.

Dr. Dennis C. Leiner of Lighthouse Imaging Corp. of Portland received a $10,000 grant in the Precision Manufacturing Technology category
to complete testing of the prototype of an autoclavable endoscope video coupler.

“Despite this being our seventh round of grants,” Yancey-Wrona stated, “we continue to be impressed with the unique projects being proposed by individuals and companies from throughout Maine. The reviewers were also pleased with both the number and the diversity of the applications. There are some potentially exciting projects here that certainly reflect the inventiveness of Maine’s people.”

All seven targeted technology sectors are covered in this round of grants, and grants have been awarded to companies from all regions of the state.

MTI Seed Grants range from $1,000 to $10,000 per project and are offered on a competitive basis to support early activities for product development, commercialization or business planning and development. Each grant requires a 1:1 match consisting of actual cash, salaries, staff time or equipment directly attributable to the proposed project. Seed Grants are awarded four times each year.
The MTI was created by the Legislature in 1999 to encourage, promote, stimulate and support research and development activity leading to the commercialization of new products and services in the state’s technology-intensive industrial sectors. Programs are designed to enhance the competitive position of those sectors and increase the likelihood that one or more of the sectors will support clusters of industrial activity and create new jobs.

The targeted technology sectors include advanced technologies for forestry and agriculture, aquaculture and marine technology, biotechnology, composites materials technology, environmental technology, information technology and precision manufacturing technology.
